Interior Design Journalism - An Introduction

Blog Friends !
Namaskar !!

I have designed these 'KEYRINGS' on a special demand of one of my good and super cool frnds 'Mr. Archit Mishra' . Designing of a keyring with the college's logo in minimal budget was the assignment of Archit's management college based in Ludhiana. Archit has provided me the details abt this assignment and ask me if i can design a keyring for him. I personally believe that in designing field , the details provided by your client are not the details......actually they make the design and beautifully designed objects fulfill our desire for art and a better lifestyle .  - Rishabh Shukla ( RS ) .

Interior Design Journalism - An Introduction

To understand the meaning of Interior Design Journalism , first of all we should understand what Interior Designing is all about .

Do you have a habit of critically look at someone's home décor ? Do you keep doing up your home with newer and better paraphernalias & knick-knacks? Do u have keen interest in colours, accessories, furniture, furnishings, managing spaces, meeting & dealing with different people ? Do u think u are able to transform a simple place to a beautiful one by adding extra zing to it ? Do you sometimes feel that some homes do not reflect the owner's personality?

If you have said yes to any of the above, you are well on your way to being a good interior designer.

‘Interior design’ does not require an introduction. The popularity of interior designing as a discipline is not confined to urban cities but it has rapidly spread to small town and cities across the nation. This is largely because of the changing lifestyle of people and their want to customise their residence with the help of an expert who can understand their taste and preference. So, if you are looking at making a career in interior design, here's some helpful information :

When we are talking about interior designing, the first question that arises in mind is :
what exactly interior designing is all about ?

And the answer is here :

Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space. Interior designing means better utilization of a particular space according to the requirements & budget of the client & to create healthy living ambience by using different kinds of materials. In other words interior design is a profession concerned with anything that is found inside a space {walls, windows, doors, finishes, furniture, texture, lights, furnishings, accessories etc.}. All of these elements are used by Interior designers to develop a fuctional, safe, aesthetically pleasing space for a building user.
In simple words, we can say interior designing is the arrangement of living spaces i.e, organizing, managing & planning of the interiors of residential , commercial or industrial spaces.

While some would say it is just the art of putting some furniture together, interior designers beg to differ. Experts say that interior design is a creative process that understands the client's need, creates a conceptual design, review the design, and produces a final cut design document or plan. So it's not only involves decoration but it also involves aspects of environmental psychology, architecture and product design.
Most of the people get very much confused ,whether interior design & interior decoration are the same things with different names. The clarification is : NO, there is a distinct difference between interior design & interior decoration.

Interior decorating is the application of finishes, i.e., wallpaper, paint, fabrics, window coverings, furnishings, etc. Goal of interior decoration is to provide a certain feel for the room that is attractive, easy to use & functions well with the existing design & architecture. An interior decorator fashions the look of a space & its outward decoration in addition to enhancing the total visual environment. An interior decorator works to enhance the aesthetic value of a space. Contrary to interior design that involves manipulating the architectural integrity of interior spaces as well as the creation of a lifestyle experience through the study of human behaviour. Definitely, it encompasses a much greater scope of practice and professionalism.

Work, Qualities & Responsibilities of an Interior designer:

An interior designer is a professional who identifies, researches and creatively solves problems to interpret the function and quality of the interior environment. A designer is responsible for performing services relative to interior spaces, including data collection, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building codes, equipment, materials and furnishings.
The work of interior design draws upon many disciplines including environmental psychology, architecture, product design, décor [ aesthetic & cosmetics ]. Designers plan the space of almost every type of building, hotels , theatres, corporate spaces, schools, hospitals, residences, shopping malls, restaurants, airport terminals etc. Today, interior designers must be attuned to architectural detailings including floor plans, home renovations & construction codes.

The basic job of an interior designer is to make optimal utilisation of available space. Further, you have to make the space more functional and in accordance with the taste and budget of the client. Besides visualising and conceptualising the designs for new structures, interior designers also plan the interiors of existing structures that are undergoing renovation or extension.

A designer should have ability to create the design as per the customer’s requirements . He/she should be able to provide maximum satisfaction to their clients as the key ingredient to be a successful interior designer is client satisfaction .
Interior designers should have ability to forecast the trend . They should be a good trend setter too.

Designers must have ability to create the design i.e., aesthetically appealing, technically sophisticated & pragmatically satisfying. They need to be imaginative, creative & artistic.
Designers must be aware with the latest trends & market needs . They should have ability to understand needs & wants of clients , able to develop the product or design, which satisfies the needs of the clients better than the competitors & also doing all this at a profit.

Designers also need to be disciplined, organized, & skilled business people . They must have good communication skills. They must communicate clearly & effectively as well as be attentive listeners as they have to work with different service providers. Also, they need to be good team leader & good team players.
Designers should have project management skills since they frequently work on more than one project at a time .
Interior designers often work under stress to meet deadlines, stay on budgets & meet client’s needs. Their work tends to involve a great deal of traveling to visit different locations , studios or client’s homes & offices etc. so they must ability to handle the stress.

Skills required :

All you need is creative thinking, creativity is crucial in any design profession, excellent communication skills, originality, good interpersonal skills, good listening capability and a keen interest in transforming a simple place to a beautiful one.An understanding of fashion, cultural preferences and good management skills are also equally important aspects expected for a career in the interior designing business.
A professional course helps you to develop and polish these traits.

If you think you have it in you, then this is the right career for you.

In today's professsion of Interior Design , questions abound in areas such as distinguishing design from decoration, educating the public about what designers do and elevating professional standards. All of these issues are brought out and discussed through Interior Design Journalism , which is a vital component to recognition of the field.
Students frequently turn to magazines for ideas and research for class projects. Designers depend on the trade press for updates in the profession .Homeowners look to design publications for advice and inspiration to apply to their own spaces. So we can say that Interior design journalism is used in so many ways.

Interior Design Journalism is like any other ( journalism ) getting your facts right with some understanding of the subject . You know the issues of interior design, what it does , how it works , what its purpose is. Education is a common goal for both the trade press and consumer publications. The mission of interior design journalists is to educate designers on their purpose, their jobs, inform consumers about working with designers and the process of design.

Interior Design Journalist :   Do you wonder who writes the project articles and industry news you read about each month ? Are they designers who write or trained journalists who like design ? Does it really matter ? It does because what they write and their effectiveness has a huge impact on how the profession is viewed.

When it comes to qualifications for writing about interior design , the ideal is training in both professions { interior designing and creative writing } .

Interior design has seen and will continue to undergo many changes as it seeks greater professional recognition and standardization . The profession is still in adolescence . A lot of research is going on trying to decide what it is and what it involves. Design journalism can play a key role in helping the profession find its place.
Sure its fun to look at photographs and drawings of cleverly designed and beautifully decorated rooms . But design journalism has a much greater purpose than pretty pictures . It is reporting fairly and accurately on the issues and the individuals invloved in the profession and then writing the information in a way designers and the general public can easily understand. If journalism can accomplish this, the interior design profession will be one step closer to the status it strives to reach.
